Penannular means incomplete circle, and these brooches were originally designed as a utilitarian cloak fastener during the iron age. Often known as Celtic Brooches, worn by the Romans, Vikings, Irish, and Scottish among others.
These pins are not sharp as they are not meant to pierce through fabric but rather push between the woven fibers such as with knitted or crocheted scarves, or bunch up a lightweight scarf. There are quite a few helpful videos on youtube that demonstrate how to use these. They are also used for period costumes, such as cloaks.
